Treasure Hunt---Let’s Find Green Pearls!
1. Location:
the Pesticide-Free Guava Orchard, five minutes’ walk from the west of Lun-Ya Elementary School.
2. Brief Introduction of the orchard owner:
The owner, Mr. Zhe-Zong Xiao, used to grow rice for a while. But gradually he became more interested in growing guava---the high yielding crop, which is more profitable than rice. So, he started to learn growing guava just a few years ago. In order to grow guava without pesticides and to prevent costumers and himself from the toxic chemicals, Mr. Xiao has been taking classes at places like National Chung Hsing University and Farmers’ Association to learn how to grow sweet, healthy and bigger guavas.

3. How to Grow a Green Pearl Guava Tree
Lessons learned in this treasure hunt:
After visiting the farm, we found that it is not easy to grow guava trees, for there are too many things to care about, such as watering time and the amount of fertilizer. It is much more challenging to grow the trees without using any chemicals.
The owner once said, “Most guavas you see in the market are pesticide-contaminated.” Mr. Xiao didn’t use any chemicals in his farm, and the fruits were easily threatened by diseases and pests. Even though, he learned from the experience and figured out many ways to solve the problems.
Growing a guava tree is no joke; it needs special care. We should cherish and appreciate every guava we have, because they grow under the farmers’ labor and effort. That is why they turn out to be beautiful, smooth green pearls. People who taste them, taste happiness.
